Panikos Panayi
Migrant CityOp vrijdag 6 oktober presenteert Guiding Voices in samenwerking met FENIX en Verhalenhuis Belvédère een avond over de kracht van migratie. Te gast is de Britse cultuurhistoricus Panikos Panayi. In FENIX, het nieuwe migratiemuseum in aanbouw, spreekt hij met interviewer Ernest van der Kwast over zijn boek Migrant City. A New History of London. Postbezorger Ahmed Abdillahi houdt een inleiding bij het programma.

In Migrant City. A New History of London (2020) laat Panikos Panayi overtuigend zien dat het hedendaagse Londen niet had kunnen bestaan zonder migratie. Nieuwkomers hebben al eeuwenlang een diepgaande impact op de sociale, politieke en economische ontwikkeling van de stad. Romeinse stichters, Joodse en Duitse landverhuizers, gemeenschappen uit Azië en het Caribisch gebied: de geschiedenis van Londen kent vele culturen, keukens en talen.
Panayi, zelf zoon van Cypriotische migranten, beschrijft treffend en tot in detail hoe de wereldstad als magneet werkt – op zowel onderbetaalde arbeiders als rijke elites. Zij dragen bij aan de florerende financiële sector, de curryhuizen en de voetbalclubs. Panayi laat zien dat er geen verschil mag zijn tussen mensen die in Londen zijn geboren en mensen van buiten omdat het altijd een stad van migranten is geweest.
Panikos Panayi (1962) is hoogleraar Europese Geschiedenis aan De Montfort University in Leicester. Hij schreef veelgeprezen boeken, waaronder Fish and Chips: A Takeaway History, waarin de oorsprong, geschiedenis en identiteit van de populairste afhaalmaaltijd van Groot-Brittannië centraal staat.
Dit programma komt tot stand in samenwerking met FENIX en Verhalenhuis Belvédère. Het interview vindt plaats op een bijzondere plek: de overdekte bouwplaats van dit toekomstige museum over migratie dat in 2025 de deuren opent in Fenixloods II.

In Migrant City. A New History of London (2020), Panikos Panayi persuasively demonstrates that contemporary London could not have existed without migration. For centuries, newcomers have had a deep impact on the social, political and economic development of the city. The Roman founders, Jewish and German emigrants, communities from Asia and the Caribbean: the history of London has known many cultures, cuisines and languages.
Panayi, himself the son of Cypriot migrants, describes saliently and in detail how the metropolis works as a magnet on both underpaid labourers and rich elites. They support the flourishing financial sector, the curry houses and the football clubs. Panayi demonstrates that there can be no difference between Londoners who have been born in the city and those who have arrived later, because it has always been a city of migrants.
Panikos Panayi (1962) is professor of European History at De Montfort University in Leicester. He has written much-praised books, including Fish and Chips: A Takeaway History, in which the origin, history and identity of the popular takeaway meal in Britain is central.
