#MeToo heeft de publieke discussie over consent internationaal flink aangewakkerd. Maar de gedachte dat seks alleen is toegestaan als alle partijen expliciet instemmen, heeft keerzijdes. Consent is veranderlijk en niet vast te leggen in een contract. In haar nieuwe boek The Joy of Consent. A Philosophy of Good Sex pleit politiek en feministisch filosoof Manon Garcia overtuigend voor het cultiveren van consent. Van Kant tot kink: in een verfrissend origineel betoog laat ze zien hoe aandacht voor consent bijdraagt aan intiem plezier. Consent maakt sexy en bevrijdt het verlangen van dominante, patriarchale denkbeelden.
Manon Garcia is junior hoogleraar praktische filosofie aan de Vrije Universiteit in Berlijn. Haar eerste boek, We Are Not Born Submissive: How Patriarchy Shapes Women’s Lives werd voor het eerst gepubliceerd in het Frans in 2018 en is veelvuldig vertaald. Garcia werkte onder andere aan Harvard, Yale en de Universiteit van Chicago. The Joy of Consent won de Prix des Rencontres Philosophiques de Monaco voor het beste filosofische boek gepubliceerd in Frankrijk in 2022.

#MeToo has stoked the discussion about consent considerably all over the world. However, the idea that sex is only legitimate if all parties have given explicit consent has downsides. Consent is fluid and cannot be pinned down in a contract. In her new book The Joy of Consent. A Philosophy of Good Sex, the political and feminist philosopher Manon Garcia argues convincingly for the cultivation of that consent. From Kant to kink: in a refreshingly original plea, she demonstrates how the consideration of consent contributes to intimate pleasure. Consent is sexy, liberating desire from dominant, patriarchal concepts.
Manon Garcia is a junior professor of practical philosophy at the Freie Universität Berlin. Her first book, We Are Not Born Submissive: How Patriarchy Shapes Women’s Lives, was published in French in 2018 before being widely translated. Garcia has worked at Harvard, Yale and the University of Chicago. The Joy of Consent won the Prix des Rencontres Philosophiques de Monaco for the best book of philosophy published in France in 2022.
