Op donderdag 9 november presenteert Guiding Voices in samenwerking met De Dépendance een programma met de Amerikaanse sciencefictionschrijver Kim Stanley Robinson. In het Hofpleintheater spreekt hij over zijn boek The Ministry for the Future.

In The Ministry for the Future (2020) leidt een allesverstikkende hittegolf tot grootschalige sterfte in een Indiaas dorp. Wetenschappers pompen water weg bij smeltende ijskappen om stijgende zeespiegels te voorkomen. De VN richt Het Ministerie van de Toekomst op: een internationaal klimaatcrisisorgaan dat toekomstige generaties, en entiteiten die niet voor zichzelf kunnen spreken, moet beschermen – door vervuilende passagiersvliegtuigen met drones neer te halen.
De roman The Ministry for the Future is zowel wanhopig als hoopvol. Met donkere humor en indrukwekkende natuurwetenschappelijke kennis bevraagt Kim Stanley Robinson of de klimaatcrisis kan worden teruggedraaid. De setting is 2025: niet een post-apocalyptische wereld, maar een toekomst die direct voor de deur staat.
Kim Stanley Robinson (1952) is een Amerikaanse sciencefictionauteur, en schreef meer dan twintig romans en talloze korte verhalen. Hij is vooral bekend om zijn Mars-trilogie (1992-1996). In zijn werk komen ecologische, culturele en politieke thema’s veelvuldig aan bod. The New Yorker noemt Robinson ‘een van de grootste levende sciencefictionschrijvers’ en Barack Obama koos The Ministry for the Future als een van zijn favoriete boeken van het jaar.
On Saturday 9th November in collaboration with De Dépendance, Guiding Voices will be presenting an evening with the American science-fiction writer Kim Stanley Robinson. He will be talking in the Hofpleintheater about his book The Ministry for the Future.

In The Ministry for the Future (2020), a suffocating heatwave leads to widespread death in an Indian town. Scientists pump water away from melting ice caps to avoid rising sea levels. The UN establishes the Ministry for the Future: an international climate body that has to protect future generations and entities that cannot speak for themselves by shooting down polluting airliners with drones.

Kim Stanley Robinson (1952) is an American science-fiction writer who has written more than twenty novels and innumerable short stories. He is best known for his Mars trilogy (1992-1996). Ecological, cultural and political themes appear frequently in his work. The New Yorker hails Robinson as ‘one of the greatest living science-fiction writers’ and Barack Obama chose The Ministry for the Future as one of his favourite books of the year.
