The Social Distance Between UsOp zaterdag 18 november presenteert Guiding Voices een programma met de Schotse auteur en rapper Darren McGarvey. In het Wijkpaleis gaat hij in gesprek met interviewer Ron Meyer over zijn veelgeprezen boek The Social Distance Between Us: How Remote Politics Wrecked Britain. Met zijn nieuwste boek biedt auteur, hiphopartiest en commentator Darren McGarvey een kijk achter de coulissen van de Britse maatschappij, en een blik op de realiteit: die van diepe sociale crisis.
De ontmoetingen en persoonlijke ervaringen in The Social Distance Between Us – van dakloosheid, armoede en verslaving tot onredelijk politieoptreden en slechte behandeling van immigranten – zijn schrijnend en oncomfortabel. McGarvey verwoordt scherp hoe de heersende macht in het Verenigd Koninkrijk opereert, ver weg van de mensen die het dirigeert. Hij roept op de arbeidersklasse écht te horen, zodat ongelijkheid wordt doorbroken in plaats van eindeloos gereproduceerd.
Eerder schreef Darren McGarvey (1984) Poverty Safari: Understanding the Anger of Britain’s Underclass, waarin hij vertelt over zijn jeugd met een alcoholverslaafde moeder én kritiek uit op hoe we armoede neigen te zien. Het boek won de Orwell Prize in 2018 en werd geprezen door onder andere Ken Loach, J.K. Rowling en Irvine Welsh. McGarvey draagt regelmatig bij aan kranten, radio en televisie als sociaal commentator en activist, onder andere voor de BBC. In 2023 startte hij de nieuwe podcastserie Common People.
In Het Wijkpaleis wordt voorafgaand aan het programma een vegetarische Surinaamse maaltijd geserveerd. Kosten vijf euro, aanvang: 19 uur.

With his latest book, hip hop artist and commentator Darren McGarvey pulls back the curtain on British society and offers a view of the reality: that of deep social crisis.
The encounters and personal experiences in The Social Distance Between Us – from homelessness, poverty and addiction to disproportionate policing and the poor treatment of immigrants – are harrowing and uncomfortable. McGarvey has sharp words for how the ruling power in the United Kingdom operates far away from the people it governs. He calls for the working class to be truly heard so that the cycle of inequality can be broken rather than endlessly reproduced.
Darren McGarvey (1984) previously wrote Poverty Safari: Understanding the Anger of Britain’s Underclass, in which he described his youth with an alcoholic mother and criticises how we tend to view poverty. The book won the Orwell Prize in 2018 and was praised by the likes of Ken Loach, J.K. Rowling and Irvine Welsh. McGarvey regularly contributes to newspapers, radio and television, including the BBC, as a social commentator and activist. In 2023 he started the podcast series Common People.
