Op zaterdag 10 juni presenteert Guiding Voices in samenwerking met Poetry International een programma met de Amerikaanse dichter Ada Limón. Tijdens het 53e Poetry International Festival spreekt zij in LantarenVenster met interviewer Shantie Singh over haar werk. Dichter des Vaderlands Babs Gons houdt een inleiding bij het programma.

Ada Limón is de 24e poet laureate van de Verenigde Staten, en de eerste Latijns-Amerikaanse vrouw in die rol. Onlangs werd ze bij hoge uitzondering voor een tweede, langere termijn benoemd. Ze schreef zes veelgeprezen poëziebundels, waaronder The Carrying (2018) die de National Book Critics Circle Award voor poëzie won. The Hurting Kind, haar meest recente bundel, verscheen in 2022. Met haar gedichten – eerlijk, open, kwetsbaar en intens – laat Limón moedig haar licht schijnen over het leven in een turbulente wereld. In krachtige, duizelingwekkende bewoordingen verhaalt ze over herkenbare momenten van verlies, hoop en schoonheid. Haar observaties reiken diep en zijn tegelijkertijd toegankelijk. Onderwerpen als liefde, vruchtbaarheid, het lichaam, en de imperfecties van het bestaan komen in haar werk veelvuldig aan bod.
Limón schrijft, geeft les en was host van de bejubelde poëziepodcast The Slowdown. Voor NASA werkt ze aan een gedicht dat wordt gegraveerd op een ruimtevaartuig: de lancering wordt verwacht in 2024. Onlangs ontving ze een Guggenheim Fellowship. Ook schreef Limón een ode aan de bomen die een rol speelden in haar leven – van Californië en New York City tot Cape Cod en Kentucky, waar ze woont.

Ada Limón is the United States’ 24th poet laureate and the first Latin-American woman to occupy the position. Recently, she was named for a second, longer term. She has written six much-praised poetry collections, including The Carrying (2018), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award for poetry. The Hurting Kind, her most recent collection, was published in 2022. Limón’s poems – honest, open, vulnerable and intense – courageously reflect on life in a turbulent world. She recounts recognisable moments of loss, hope and beauty in powerful, dizzying language. Her observations are deep, yet at the same time accessible. Subjects such as love, fertility, the body and the imperfections of existence appear frequently in her work.
Limón writes, teaches and is the host of the acclaimed podcast The Slowdown. She is currently working on a poem for NASA that will be engraved on a spacecraft and the launch is expected in 2024. She recently received a Guggenheim Fellowship and she has also dedicated an ode to the trees that have played a role in her life in California, New York City, Cape Cod and Kentucky, where she lives.
