Reni Eddo-Lodge (1989) wrote a blog post in 2014 in which she gave vent to her frustration about racism in British society. The post went viral. She subsequently elaborated her ideas in the award-winning best-seller Why I’m No Longer Talking to White People About Race. Her podcast ‘About Race with Reni Eddo-Lodge’ was hailed by The Guardian as one of the ten best podcasts of 2018. The business magazine Forbes placed her this year on the most influential ‘30 under 30 Europe’ list.
Racism is our problem. It’s not just about aggression, but the subtle, but nonetheless racist, prejudices you’re confronted with every day. What does it mean to be non-white in a world where being white is a given? Reni Eddo-Lodge went in search of the historic causes of racist prejudice and demonstrated how the inequality between white and non-white in society works. Racism is in politics, on the street and in our pop culture. It’s not just about a deeply-rooted fear of mass immigration or a discussion about a black James Bond, there is a great deal of discrimination from well-meaning people as well. In order to address structural racism, we all have to become aware of it, argues Eddo-Lodge.

Reni Eddo-Lodge (1989) schreef in 2014 een blogpost waarin ze haar frustratie over het racisme in de Britse samenleving de vrije loop liet. De blogpost ging viraal. Eddo-Lodge werkte haar ideeën uit tot de veelbekroonde bestseller Waarom ik niet meer met witte mensen over racisme praat. Haar podcast About Race with Reni Eddo-Lodgewerd door The Guardian verkozen tot een van beste podcasts van 2018. Zakentijdschrift Forbes plaatste haar dit jaar trots op de invloedrijke lijst ‘30 under 30 Europe’.
Racisme is ons probleem. Het gaat niet alleen om agressie, maar ook om subtiele vooroordelen die je overal tegenkomt. Wat betekent het om niet wit te zijn in een wereld waarin wit zijn als vanzelfsprekend wordt ervaren? Reni Eddo-Lodge gaat op zoek naar de historische oorzaken van racistische vooroordelen en toont aan hoe de ongelijkheid tussen wit en niet-wit in onze samenleving werkt. Racisme vind je in de politiek, op straat en in onze popcultuur. Het gaat lang niet alleen om de diepgewortelde angst voor massamigratie of een discussie over een zwarte James Bond. Discriminatie vind je ook terug bij welmenende, tolerante burgers. Om het structurele racisme tegen te gaan moeten we er ons allemaal bewust van worden, zegt Reni Eddo-Lodge.
