Against Borders. The Case for Abolition
Op donderdag 11 september presenteert Guiding Voices een programma met de Britse schrijver Gracie Mae Bradley. In het Wijkpaleis spreekt ze met interviewer Amy Gowen over haar boek Against Borders. Een politiek van controle is een beperking van de vrijheid, voor iedereen. In Against Borders. The Case for Abolition breken Gracie Mae Bradley en co-auteur Luke de Noronha een lans voor het ontmantelen van autoritaire grenzen.
Profilering en surveillance, ook digitaal, worden steeds strikter. Voor een leefbare toekomst voor mens en planeet moeten we opnieuw kijken naar de omstandigheden die aanleiding geven tot het optrekken van harde grenzen. En die gaan niet alleen over migratie. Als ervaren ‘campaigner’ voor collectieve verandering wordt Bradley gedreven door een breder perspectief: economische rechtvaardigheid, gelijkheid, solidariteit en duurzaamheid. Hoe kan verbeelding bijdragen aan het radicaal transformeren van schadelijke grenzen? En waar komen schrijven en actievoeren samen in haar werk?
Gracie Mae Bradley is schrijver, strategisch denker en campagnevoerder op het gebied van burgerrechten, migratie, politiek en klimaat. Ze coördineerde de Grenfell Testimony Week (2024), was host van de Locating Legacies-podcast van de Stuart Hall Foundation (2023) en de eerste vrouw ooit die Friends of the Earth Scotland leidde (2023). Naast Against Borders. The Case for Abolition (met Luke de Noronha, 2022) publiceerde ze korte fictieverhalen geïnspireerd door zwart feminisme en vrijheid. Haar artikelen verschenen in The Guardian, OpenDemocracy, The Independent en Vice. Bradley doet promotieonderzoek in Creative Writing aan Glasgow University, over het belang van verbeelding in ‘political organising’.
Amy Gowen is schrijver en redacteur en woont in Rotterdam. Ze is adjunct-directeur van het peer learning programma School of Commons aan de Zürich University of the Arts, co-programmeur van het International Community Arts Festival Rotterdam, medeoprichter van HumDrumPress en host van het radioprogramma Off Margin op Radio WORM. Uit haar werk spreekt een grote nieuwsgierigheid naar alledaagse vormen van collectiviteit en ‘commoning’.

On Thursday the 11th of September, Guiding Voices will be presenting an evening with the British author Gracie Mae Bradley. At the Wijkpaleis community centre in Rotterdam (NL) she will engage in a conversation with interviewer Amy Gowen about her book Against Borders. The Case for Abolition. A politics of control is a restriction of freedom, for everyone. In Against Borders. The Case for Abolition, Gracie Mae Bradley and co-author Luke de Noronha make a case for abolishing authoritarian borders.
Policing and surveillance, including in the digital realm, are becoming increasingly strict. For a liveable future for people and planet, we need to reconsider the conditions to which violent borders are a response. And that is not just migration. As an experienced campaigner for systemic change, Bradley is driven by a broader perspective: economic justice, equality, solidarity, and sustainability. How can the imagination contribute to radically transforming harmful borders? And where do writing and campaigning converge in her work?
Gracie Mae Bradley is a writer, strategic thinker, and campaigner on civil liberties, migration, politics, and climate. She coordinated Grenfell Testimony Week (2024), hosted the Stuart Hall Foundation Locating Legacies podcast (2023) and was the first woman ever to direct Friends of the Earth Scotland (2023). In addition to Against Borders. The Case for Abolition (with Luke de Noronha, 2022) she published short stories inspired by Black feminism and freedom. Her articles appeared in The Guardian, OpenDemocracy, The Independent, and Vice. Bradley is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Fine Art in Creative Writing at Glasgow University on the meaning of fiction for political organising.
Amy Gowen is a writer and editor based in Rotterdam. She is deputy director of the peer learning programme School of Commons at Zurich University of the Arts, co-programmer of the International Community Arts Festival Rotterdam, co-founder of HumDrumPress, and host of the radio show Off Margin on Radio WORM. In her work and writing she maintains a fervent curiosity towards everyday forms of collective practice and commoning.
