Op zaterdag 14 juni presenteert Guiding Voices in samenwerking met Poetry International een programma met dichter Chris Tse, Poet Laureate van Nieuw-Zeeland. Identiteit en intersectionaliteit zijn belangrijke thema’s in het werk van dichter en schrijver Chris Tse, sinds 2022 de Poet Laureate van Nieuw-Zeeland/Aotearoa. In scherpe, gelaagde observaties reflecteert Tse openhartig op de verschillende werelden waarin hij als queer schrijver met een Chinese achtergrond beweegt. Via persoonlijke ervaringen en historische gebeurtenissen laat hij zien hoe discriminatie en uitsluiting de geschiedenis pijnlijk hebben bepaald – maar ook dagelijks opspelen in dating apps, literaire kringen en popmuziek. Hoe helpt poëzie hem te dromen over een toekomst voorbij labels, naties en genres?
Chris Tse studeerde film, Engelse literatuur en creative writing aan de Victoria University of Wellington. Hij schreef de veelgeprezen poëziebundels Super Model Minority (2022), HE’S SO MASC (2018) en How to be Dead in a Year of Snakes (2014) en is mederedacteur van Out Here: An anthology of Takatāpui and LGBTQIA+ writers from Aotearoa (2021), de eerste grote bloemlezing door queer Aotearoa schrijvers. In 2024 volgde hij een schrijfresidentie aan de University of Iowa en werd zijn positie als Poet Laureate verlengd tot herfst 2025.

Identity and intersectionality are key themes in the work of poet and writer Chris Tse, Poet Laureate of New Zealand/Aotearoa since 2022. In sharp, multi-layered observations, Tse candidly reflects on the different worlds he navigates as a queer writer of Chinese heritage. Through personal experiences and historical events, he reveals how discrimination and exclusion have painfully shaped history – and continue to play out daily in dating apps, literary circles and pop music. How does poetry help him dream of a future beyond labels, nations, and genres?
Chris Tse studied film, English literature and creative writing at the Victoria University of Wellington. He wrote the acclaimed poetry collections Super Model Minority (2022), HE’S SO MASC (2018) and How to be Dead in a Year of Snakes (2014) and is the co-editor of Out Here: An anthology of Takatāpui and LGBTQIA+ writers from Aotearoa (2021), the first major anthology by queer Aotearoa writers. In 2024, he participated in a writing residency at the University of Iowa and his term as Poet Laureate was extended until autumn 2025.
