Op zaterdag 6 juni presenteert Guiding Voices in samenwerking met Poetry International een programma met de Amerikaanse dichter Aracelis Girmay. Tijdens de 56e editie van Poetry International Festival spreekt zij in LantarenVenster met schrijver Ernest van der Kwast over haar werk en het verbeelden van parallelle werelden.

In de gedichten van Aracelis Girmay krijgen de kleinste dingen een diep resonerende stem. Met een verraderlijke eenvoud gaat het gerinkel van bestek over in een oneindig gevoel van verlies. Liefdevol beschrijft Girmay gedeelde momenten van transitie: van de Afrikaanse diaspora, oorlog en geboorte tot de smaak van zout, galopperende paarden en een kosmische droom. Met haar poëzie zoomt ze in op het leven in al zijn dimensies, verrassend gevangen in alledaagse observaties en eigenzinnig optimisme.
Aracelis Girmay (1977) is dichter en auteur van vier poëziebundels, waaronder GREEN OF ALL HEADS (2025), genomineerd voor de PEN America Literary Awards 2026, en the black maria (2016). Ze is redacteur van So We Can Know: Writers of Color on Pregnancy, Loss, Abortion, and Birth (2023) en How to Carry Water: Selected Poems of Lucille Clifton (2020). Girmay was finalist voor de prestigieuze Neustadt International Prize for Literature en ontving onder meer de Academy of American Poets Fellowship. Ze werkt samen met illustratoren en theatermakers, maakt deel uit van de redactie van de African Poetry Book Fund en geeft les aan Stanford University.
On Saturday the 6th of June, Guiding Voices, in collaboration with Poetry International, presents a programme featuring the American poet Aracelis Girmay. In Aracelis Girmay’s poems, the smallest things gain a deeply resonant voice. With deceptive simplicity, the clink of cutlery gives way to an enduring sense of loss. Girmay tenderly traces shared moments of transition: from the African diaspora, war, and birth to the taste of salt, galloping horses, and a cosmic dream. Her poetry zooms in on life in all its dimensions, rendered through everyday observation and a distinctive optimism.
Aracelis Girmay (1977) is a poet and the author of four poetry collections, including GREEN OF ALL HEADS (2025), nominated for the 2026 PEN America Literary Awards, and the black maria (2016). She is the editor of So We Can Know: Writers of Color on Pregnancy, Loss, Abortion, and Birth (2023) and How to Carry Water: Selected Poems of Lucille Clifton (2020). Girmay was a finalist for the prestigious Neustadt International Prize for Literature and has received, among other honours, the Academy of American Poets Fellowship. She collaborates with illustrators and theatre makers, serves on the editorial board of the African Poetry Book Fund, and teaches at Stanford University.
